What everyone is pissed about is that Discord feels the 12+ rating is more important than hosting the 18+ servers. But they choose to both chase a teen market and host controversial content. But I'm not about to tell other people how to parent their kids and given that iPhone has 90% marketshare with teens, I think it's safe to say that Apple is reading the market correctly.īut I don't understand why a bunch of people that are clearly not using content restrictions are pissed off that Apple is enforcing content restrictions for the people that want them. We always believed in acknowledging everything out there and engaging with them on it. I believe if they changed that and enforced the OS level whitelist by default, they could get that rating changed.Īnd to be clear, we never did content restrictions with our kids.
Chrome has a trusted sites setting, but it doesn't respect the OS level one.
Without the 17+ rating, kids could trivially bypass the whitelist. Typically for a kid you'd set Safari to a site whitelist, and set content to 4+, 9+, or 12+. Safari supports the in-OS content restrictions.
This is beyond inappropriate levels of prude. Apple shouldn't be dictating what other services deem appropriate or not so long as they are not spreading hate speech. I know a ton of people that are on NSFW servers or at least have channels in their servers that are designated for it. I get not selling NSFW or porn games or porn stuff in general, but this is flat out telling a service for voice, text, and video chat that allows for posting of NSFW images in NSFW tagged channels that they can't have people that own iOS products to use their service. It is a rule that needs to be challeneged and not alloweds to stand. This would be a case of them banning you from sending NSFW message on imessages or in your own group chats.
Apple is flat out dictating what their users can access on someone else's services or flatly telling that service that they will potentially ban the app from the app store. Someone joining a NSFW server on discord (for voice chat and text/images) is opting to join that server. Are server owners supposed to tell their mods to go out and get Android devices, or get new mods that do and tell them not to switch to iOS devices ever?Īll of this is just so irritating and baffling and I really do hope it gets sorted out sometime soon, because it’s gonna cause havoc in a lot of communities on the platform.ĭiscord is far from "NSFW" garbage at all. Sure you could let mods see the server on the iOS app too, but that’d open up a loophole where you give everyone mod privileges and I’m pretty sure they aren’t dumb enough to do that. What if someoneĪnd sure, server owners can keep track of their server on their iOS devices, but the moderators that the server owners trust, they need to be able to access the server at any time to take care of things, and if they’re on iOS, having to install Chrome or Firefox to use Discord with an inferior web app that’s not as seamless or intuitive as the proper app is bad. Mental health support groups, things like that. There are tons of servers that are marked NSFW because they deal with heavy subject matter. I’ve been doing some more reading and this doesn’t just affect porn.
